How to bill services hourly

GoProposal is designed to avoid hourly billing because it can limit growth and undervalue your services. However, if you need to bill hourly, you can follow this workaround.

Written by Russell Henderson

Step 1 - Add a line item for hourly work

  1. Go to Configure and select Line Items.

  2. Create a new line item or duplicate an existing one.

  3. In the Pricing tab:

    • Set the price as your hourly rate

    • Choose whether the rate is Monthly (ongoing work) or One-off (unplanned project)

  4. Add a calculation to multiply the hourly rate by a Quantity field.

    • Name the field something like Estimated number of hours

📌 TIP: This allows you to estimate hours when creating a proposal. Alternatively, include the hourly rate in the line item label and leave the fee as £0 in the table.

Step 2 - Create a proposal template for hourly work

  1. Duplicate an existing proposal template.

  2. Update the template name to indicate that it includes hourly services.

  3. Use the Please Note section to explain your hourly billing terms.

  4. Save the template.

Step 3 - Create and edit the proposal

  1. When creating a proposal, edit the Please Note section to specify which services you want to bill hourly.

  2. Adjust totals for those line items on the calculation page or leave them as estimated.

  3. Clearly explain any potential future costs to the client.

📎 NOTE: You must invoice and bill the client outside GoProposal once you confirm the actual hours.
